What I learned in week two 5301

I learned that the best thing that the best thing that makes a school, is not a program, policy, or standard, but people. If you have good people in your school, then your school will be top quality regardless of your program goals. This view is echoed by Todd Whitaker (2003) when he asserts that “It is people, not programs that determine the quality of the school” (pg. 8). I look forward therefore to not only learning a lot, but also becoming a better person to do so.

  1. I totally agree with this statement. You can have a fabulous program in place but it ultimately comes down to the people who are going to collaboratively work together to accomplish the goals. Everyone has to be on board on open to new ideas in order to improve the quality of the school!

  2. Funny - It's the same quote which caught my attention as well! I've heard over the years of tons and tons of miracle programs...then i've listened to tons and tons of complains about how the program failed. A few years ago I was using a "program" and invested myself completely to every single component. I studied and spent hours preparing materials. I learned every aspect of the program and became a trainer in the District for this "PROGRAM"...I saw the benefits and student achievement. Yes, the program was fine...however, a year later, the program was tossed out for failing. Of course I was crushed because of the time spent working on learning the components. So, I began questioning fellow teachers who blamed the failure of their students on the program. As I listened, I heard a lack of passion, dedication, time, effort, and knowledge! The secret to success is rarely a magic pill...it's always hard work!!!!!! PEOPLE work hard...programs are simply designed (some well, some not).

  4. John, I definitley believe in that same philosophy. Without a good environment success will not exist. I look forward to other quotes from you. Also join me in your blogs.

  5. So true John! People are truly make the schools what they are. The school is what makes the students who they truly are. If the people are successful, the school is successful, thus leading to an end result of successful students. Again...win-win for everyone!
